Job Description

TITLE: ACADEMIC AIDE
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Assist primarily in the instruction of reading and math skills with individual students or small groups under the direction of the certified classroom teacher and in consultation with Title I teacher and special education teacher when appropriate.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Hold at least a high school diploma or equivalent and meet one of the following requirements:
    • Completed two years of college coursework
    • Earned an associate degree or higher; or
    • Pass a state or local academic assessment
  • Demonstrate basic reading, writing and computation skills.
  • Have previous experience with groups of children.


REPORTS TO:
Classroom Teacher and Principal

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

To assist teachers with instructional activities such as:

  1. Reading to children.
  2. Assisting children in the library.
  3. Writing the dictation given by young children.
  4. Helping children locate and use materials.
  5. Encouraging safety habits in work and play.
  6. Assisting children to understand and follow directions and rules.
  7. Encouraging children to work independently.
  8. Listening to children.
  9. Assist small groups of children in reading and areas under the supervision of the classroom teacher.
  10. Reinforce skills taught by the classroom teacher to small and large groups.
  11. Help children individually with special assignments and academic problems.
  12. Enrich classroom activities through the use of personal experiences, interests and talents.

EVALUATION:
Performance will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and regulations on evaluation of personnel.
